Ladybird Books
The man behind
Ladybird Books as we know them was Douglas Keen who joined the company in
1936. After service in WWII he set about making the books profitable as
until then they had only been a side-line operation for the company of
Wills & Hepworth. After much research into the emerging modern schools
with their new teaching methods he launched series after series of the
books we know so well including Key Words, History, Nature, Well-Loved
Tales and the Story of. His policy was to commission writers with a
passion for their subject who could make what they wrote interesting and
understandable for children. He balanced this excellence of content by
employing some of the best illustrators of the day to produce the familiar
and much loved illustrations. In 1957 he became editorial director. By
1971 Ladybird were selling some 20 million copies. But perhaps his
greatest success is that the books are bought now not only out of
affection for what we read as children but because the content has lasted
the test of time and has not been bettered.

Annuals
were first published in the late 19th Century. Bound editions of the
Chatterbox and Boys Own Paper for instance became popular.
Collecting began quite early on. |
|
|
Today most
enthusiasts collect annuals that they read as a child. Perhaps the
most popular being Beano, Dandy and Rupert annuals
|
|
|
You can chart a
childhood through annuals for instance: Robin, Eagle, Victor to
Shoot or Twinkle, Bunty, Jackie to Blue Jeans. |
|
|
The 1950s to 1970s
was probably the golden age of annuals. With the increasing number
of television related annuals such as Star Trek, Doctor Who,
Blue Peter, Play Hour and Joe 90 adding to the comic and magazine
generated output.
